Default need help if possible

ok my sons car is a 96 dohc auto,he was driving and he says it was acting up then wouldnt move,so he shuts off car ,i get there car wont start,but only in neautral,but still wouldnt move,a week goes bysittin in garage i go and mess with shifter and now it starts in park but no gears,its never acted up before only has bout 111,000 on trans.s it a switch ?valve body? any help would be appreciated

I'm not clear if it is starting in gear or just in neutral and park. It may just be the neutral safety switch. Here's a link to the one they have at Autozone. It could just be the connector to it. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in a few times in order to clear the contacts.

the cable itself may also be going bad

yea ,after further inspection i notice the shift linkage was broke wear it mounted to tranny ,so i decided to jack the car up ,noticed fluid draining out ,so crawled under it ,oh the tranny has a big a** hole in it nice ,so i guess i figured that out lol. now my 17yr old can ride bus from now on !! but i do appreciate the few comments on what it might of been

Yay more transmission carnage hahaha. It sounds like he was attempting to do burnouts. When one tries to do burnouts in the stock saturn transmission, the differential tends to overheat and eventually the center pin backs out and puts a huge hole in the case. Only way around it would be to replace the standard diff on a good transmission with an lsd, which is worth more than the car generally haha

I did that after the first time i manual swapped it, being 18 and stupid hahahaha
