I just bought a 99 sl2 and drove it over an hour home from buying it and it ran like a top except for the two times it spit gray smoke out the exhaust (per the person following me). I assumed that this was from sitting for a month, clearing out motor stuff (no, I am not so mechanically inclined). The next day it took a few tries to get it started and it has had some starting issues for a few days now, but always starts. The first time I put it in reverse it jumped a little so I just thought it needed a second to engage gear before pressing accellerator. Today, however, suddenly it stopped shifting up while driving down the road. It stayed in first and didn't upshift. I had to put in in neutral and coast and then first when I needed just to get it home. When I got in the driveway, I tried to reverse and it did perfectly. So I have reverse and first. Is there any ideas as to what this might be. (Praying it's not a new transmission...)

forgot to mention....check engine light comes on intermittantly.
