Over the years, there have been a handful of users that have reported the ECTS actually failing short circuit. Some of them may have in fact been connector failures, But we always advised users to replace the pigtail and the sensor and almost all do that.

So that does happen, but indeed most of the ECTS failures they all open which tells the PCM The PCM is -40/35..... and everything else you stated.

Unfortunately, she does not have the finances for a capable scanner to read the OBD1 codes. As stated above, this is one of the few times anyone has ever reported getting a code 13 on an OBD1 Saturn, at least in the last 18 years or however long I've been here. I had also suggested an ohm meter to check the ECTS resistance with the engine after cold soak, as that would be a pretty good indication of whether it is open, very high resistance, or very low resistance. Again, finances are an issue.

Before scanners we used flash codes starting with the 80 1/2 GM cars. 12 was the beginning and ending code with problems in between. They would repeat three times so you could write them all down. There were only a few codes to point you in the right direction. It didn’t take too long to recognize the common problems. Fords were usually the throttle position sensor, GMs were o2 and temp. Chrysler’s were lean burn problems, you know Champion plugs and 318 icing issues.

Andy, that sounds exactly like OBD1. Or was it that there were hardly any codes at all defined in the blink system back then?
And then obd1 came along with more defined codes that could also be read through the scanners they had developed? Just trying to understand the evolution.

I have gained an extra “gear” on my wipers! Glad i spotted that. The fastest they would go is medium and it sucked for trying to commute home in the rain or sleet.

The wiring repair is going to be poopy… they have either been replaced or repaired before and whoever did that didnt know where they should replace the wire at…. So the previous repairs are high up on the ects two wire pigtail, and the on the one wire it is all the way up at the bundle harness..

Two splices are okay on each wire if needed to repair short harnesses.

If they are original, just get all 4 new bolts.

I'll look them up
