Default heat/radiator Idiot light flashing

I've got a 98 SL1 1.9 single overhead with the heat/radiator Idiot light flashing and yet the temp gage is running cool. This just happened so I have not opened the radiator/overflow cap to see if fluid is low nor do I have an owners manual to read why it is flashing vs being on solid. When I lifted the hood nothing was boiling and the motor was not steaming hot. Could this be just a low fluid level warning?

Thanks,
moorecd

there is a sensor at the bottom of the reservoir tank that can get fouled and indicate that the coolant level is low -- sometimes you can take the tank off and clean it out with the sensor in it -- sometimes a new sensor is your fix

please do not double post
