'99 sl2 grinding noise
I have an intermittent issue with my '99 SL2/5 spd w/110k.
In first gear at about 8 mph or so, I hear a grinding noise. I only hear this after starting the engine, such as leaving home, work, gas station, etc.. From what I can tell, it is directly related to shutting the engine off. If i'm waiting at a stoplight, or leave the car idling for 5 minutes and then go, I don't hear the noise.
I know a "grinding" sound is vague, my best description would be similar to a noisy wheel bearing. It appears to come from the front left of the vehicle, and only lasts for less than a second. It's been this way for two months and hasn't gotten any worse.

While a noisy wheel bearing is possible (though unlikely, given the symptoms you outline). Take a minute, and pull the front wheel on the driver's side, and examine the brake disc for gouges or scouring ...
