98 sl2 auto trans question.
#1
hey guys my girlfriend just got a 98 sl2 with 179k on it. i have no idea about the matanince on the car but given the condition of the interior (needs to be steam cleaned badly) i'm guessing it wasn't taken care of very well. i guess my question is how strong is the automatic transmission in these cars? the trans is acting up a little when i put it in reverse but it goes into drive and shifts all the other gears cleanly and smoothly. is this a problem that will most likely be solved with a good trans flush or is this a good sign that the trans is on its way out and i should just start looking for another trans right now. ironicly i used to date a girl with a 96 sl2 but it had a manual trans that took a decent beating.

I have a 93 Sl1, when I put it in reverse, it's a little heasitent, then clicks in. The transmission is fine on mine, I dont know about your, but tell your girlfriend to take it easy when she has it in reverse and she goes into drive, tell her to wait until it clicks in, that's the main killer of transmissions, and going to drive from reverse while the car is still rolling backwards.

i'll make sure to tell her thanks... she drives slower than a grand ma so if anyone should be ok its her. but when hopping into the car and putting it directly into reverse it is as you said very heasitent or so i feel. sometimes it goes in easy as can be and others it just doesn't want to click until the engine has been given a little throttle. obviously the extra throttle (at about 1,000 rpms) it causes unwanted drivetrain shock. i just don't know how well built these transmissions are. from what i've been told gm transmissions are built of glass.

Yeah, pretty much, on my 98 gmc seirra, the trans. went 2 times so far, the first I had a pin drop down into the gears and gutted it inside out. Lol. and the second time, I was going to back up, and it didn't quite go in, a little hesitant, and i stepped on the gas and it blew.

yikes thats the last thing she needs right now! personally i think she over paid. the car has 179k miles, interior is beat, trans is as stated and the car has a salvage title (bull sh*t reason but the frame and car is fine). her brother told her the car was ok it just needed to be cleaned a little (he hadn't seen the car but his friend was selling it). so she got the car only to find out it had a salvage title, needs a load of cleaning, and some parts, the trans is as stated, blah... i would have paid 600 maybe 800 max.

I have an aunt who has a 95 coupe, but i dont recall the modle, but it has 350 miles on it, and it's still running fine. she usually brings it to canada with her from new hampshire. I live in New Brunswick, and that's the provience that borders maine, and it's a 9 hour drive.
