I'll try to make it short:

Replacing the head on my 96 SL1 with a more mechanically inclined friend.

When we got to removing the timing chain, we were fairly certain we had TDC set. Things were so gunked up under the timing cover, we couldnt see any marks or anything to make sure which way the crank and cam gears were pointing so we marked it ourselves.

Now that we are putting it all back together, with all the parts cleaned off, we now see marks, but they dont line up wth the marks we made.

Can someone please describe to me exactly what to look ofr to make sure we have the timing correct? The Chilton's book does a terrible job of explaining and I have yet to get my hands on the Haynes. Or is there a better manual to have?
