Default 96 SL-2 Rear Disc Brake Problem

1996 SL-2 with ABS and rear disc brakes. The car does stop ok. Have a nose coming from the drivers side rear wheel....like a rubbing sound. Rotors all around were replaced by previous owner. Pads look ok,,,just passed recent state inspection. What I did notice on this wheel is that the outside of the rotor is not very shiny, like the pad is not grabbing that hard on the outboard side, The rotor does get warm from use maybe from the inboard pad only. Could it be the caliper is not moving free on the guide pins?? Or could it be related to the emergency brake adjustment?? Just purchased this car and just dont have the time to check it more completely. The car has 13,100 miles (correct..13,100) and stood out in the weather, not driven much. Rotors were replaced about 1 yr ago by previous owner because of rusting problem.

Yep, it either sounds like the caliper is sticking or you have a bad brake hose. I'm more inclined to believe that if you remove the caliper guide pins and give them a good cleaning and lubricate them, you'll probably be okay. Give that a try and post back.

Did get the wheel off this weekend to check things out. Caliper was sticking on the pins, very tight. Carefully loosened the pins, they were rusted in and I was afraid they would snap. A good soaking with WD-40 and they broke loose. Pins were tough to get out, a lot of old dried grease and junk. Rubber bushings looked good. Cleaned everything up and lubed with the proper silicone grease. Sanded rust off the rotor on the outboard side. everything seems to be working good.
So much for the Pennsylvania state inspections. The elderly lady i purchased this car from just had it inspected and it passed with a seized caliper on the rear. It was done at a local tire distributor that would do it every year. They knew it was not driven very much so they did not check things properly. Just slap a sticker on the window, pay them $40.00 and off you go. It was obvious that there was a problem because of the rusty surface on the outboard side of the disc. Should never have passed! State inspections are for safety, not making money.

Glad to hear you got it fixed and that I actually was right for a change! LOL Shame on the tire place for not doing a proper inspection, though.
