1996 saturn sc2

hello everyone, i have a 1996 saturn sc2 five speed. now i have a question about a problem i am having. sometimes while i am driving and i come to a stop light and put it in neutral the cars rpms drop fast and to about 200rpms then jumps back up to 700rpms it will do this for quite some time so what i do is i get back in gear and shift down to get higher rpms for it to stop or just leave it in neutral and rev it up to 3,000rpms then everything is fine. i have change the serpentine belt, pcv valve, spark plugs, and the wires. now when i changed the spark plugs there was oil on cylinder. it does burn through a lot of oil but i put a stop smoke in it for the valve guides to stop leaking so much oil in the combustion chamber. another thing is when i hooked it up to a computer it said i had random/multiple mis-fire. so i am wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if so or if you have any suggestions what the problem might be the help with be greatly appreciated.

How many miles on your ride?

Assuming you mean 0300 random/multiple misfires code--pls confirm. 1st suggestion is new plugs n wires but you covered that.

If it is burning that much oil, drowning the plugs in and of itself may be causing the misfire, although my sc2s have been extremely efficient oil burners.

How much oil does it burn? Does it smoke out the tailpipe?

the car has about 150k on it, yes that is the code that did pop up when hooked up to the computer. it only smokes out of the tail pipe if I get on it hard. if i'm normaly driving and shifting easy through gears there is no smoke.

Again...how much oil does it burn?

burns about 2qts a month. I was told that it could be the valve seat which is causing oil to leak into combustion chamber and that's why there is a misfire and oil on that pistion

(sigh) and how many miles a month do you drive?

jttalg28 Jan 20, 2010 04:14 AM

like 1000 miles a month

oiy -- 1 qt every 500 miles?

That's rebuild time.

New oil control rings, compression rings while you're at it, valve job including valve guide seals, head gasket of course since you're pulling the head...

plus timing chain & guides, water pump while you're in there

I can easily see that amount of oil in the cylinders causing multiple misfires

yeah I had kinda thought so, well I already had plans to get the valve gudies done but they are also going to mill the cylinder head and do a valve job so i'll just have to see how much it will cost to get the block work done. if i'm gunna do this I wanna get some power out of it so i'll have to see what aftermarket stuff is out there. I do plan to keep this car for some time.

cyl head should not need milling if it has never overheated -- meaning it should not be warped --if it ain't broke, don't fix it -- be sure it is checked for cracks before you sink $$ into it
