Rear springs

My rear springs are starting to sag and make noise. I checked my local parts stores and appears they can not get it. I went to different website looking for a set of rear springs and came up with nothing. I have the GM part number to still no results. Any ideas of where to look?

I would suggest a wrecking yard from a non rust belt state. You might have to buy complete struts to make it worth their while.

SaturnSteve 02-19-2019 03:00 PM

That what I was trying to avoid. I don’t know how ones from the scrap yard might be any better. I guess it’s a chance I have to take. Thank you

Lowering springs are available through H&R but standard springs are probably only available used. The front springs are different based on engine and the rears by body style I suspect. I cut one coil on my rear springs and left the front alone then adjustable lower arms, new struts and a good alignment. My car made clunky noises with the old struts, new new struts make no noise.

I replaced the front springs and struts last year. I replaced the rear struts about 6 months ago. The rear springs were fine. Then about a week ago, I go over a bump and they squeak and clunk. Would it be for me to get the lowered springs or just cut the ones I have?

I would see if one broke first. When I lowered my car I had to buy the adjustable lower arms and then explain how to align it to the alignment shop. The computers don’t know about the toe adjustments on these cars. They think it is a shim car and in reality the toe is set at the front of the lower arms.

I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information. I found the H&R springs on eBay that you were talking about. It will lower the car about an inch which I can deal with.
I will get the car to my mechanic and get it up on a lift.

easy rear coil spring supply

so I ordered coils for a Saab 9-5 made in Sweden and they worked splendidly on my 2002 LW200!!!
$70 tax/shipping includedthe suspension of the L series is German Opel design and identical to Vauxhall Vectra and Saab 9-5

Great news and info, Matthew. Did you notice that the thread is 4 years old?

matthewkrivec 02-02-2023 08:51 AM

yes and I am 61 years old and still enjoying getting my hands dirty. just put a junkyard motor in it with 82k...change out that defective timing chain tensioner or risk trashing the motor like mine did at @ 180k. lol

Rubehayseed 02-03-2023 06:26 AM

Well, I have five years on you and have a bad back among other issues, but I still like pulling my own wrenches too. A little over 3 years ago, I helped a buddy in FL do an engine swap on a Chevy Sonic. He screwed it up changing the timing belt and DIDN'T have a clue what the hell he was doing. Send me an email address and I can show you pictures of what his engine looked like and why it had to be replaced! I've had two brain surgeries and am not very computer savvy. I can't figure out how to get pictures from my phone to this forum.

I posted because I spoke with at least a dozen parts suppliers and none mentioned the crossover compatability of L series with Saab 9-5 or Vauxhall Opel Vectra. There are no rear coils available for L series online, in fact I just sold the coils I had fabricated which were too soft on Ebay last week and today sold the one last remaining in stock GM rear coil I bought from a WI GM dealer which I used as a proto type when having the new coils fabricated( which were too soft)
Somehwere online I read about Saturn platform being same as Saab/Vauxhill so then I looked up coils/parts for same year on those models and took a chance. and it paid off!
obviously people are still fixing these cars because I solf the old coils within a few weeks on Ebay...

You may have read some of that from our L Series guru, Andy. He's a veritable fountain of knowledge about those things and knows about the Saab and Opel connections. So does Billy, aka DropDead.

I think yes, I did read that here...in fact I just ordered a bushing removal tool from Europe for the Saab/Vauxhill rear suspension for $46 so I can fix the trailing arm play and they were great pics depicting the whole process🙂

First one didn't count, derf. That's where they tried to make me politically correct! LOL
