Default Ignition Key coded?

Hi. I'm new here. I recently purchased a used 2001 Saturn L200 Sedan. I only received one key which is very worn. Would anyone happen to know if the ignition key is coded? I'd like to have one or two spares made but I know a coded key will be very expensive. I realize I can stop at the dealer but I was just looking for a "heads up" before I went in. It doesn't really look like coded keys I've seen in the past. Thanks for any help. -Joe

Hi there, Joe--

The 2001 Saturn does not use a "chip" key.

Here's the long and the short of it. You can go just about anywhere, and have them "copycut" a new key off the one that you have, but that will just give you a second key that has worn peaks and valleys and may not fit your lock cylinder very well.

Best option would be to go to a GM dealership that goes the extra mile to provide services for Saturn cars. They will have the ability to "cut from code" a key that will fit your lock cylinder exactly. My suggestion would be to have two brand new keys cut, and save the badly worn one for an emergency spare somewhere in the house.

The cost? Actually, the cost is to go to the website and download the code based on your VIN number --> $65 usd. So, total cost out the door at the dealer should be about $75 to $80 usd, depending on cost of the blanks and taxes in your area. Make sure the GM dealer you go to is set up for Saturn service (not all of them are), because only those dealerships will be able to get the information from the website. Good luck

I kinda thought the same thoughts derf. I guessed he might have some interest in that new web site he linked, which has almost no useful information. I'm guessing an out-of-country site.
