Default 02 L200 no fuel pressure

My son has a 2002 L200 with 2.2 the vehicle will start and run then will all of the sudden die when driving. When I checked the fuel pressure with the key on it jumps to 50 psi then drops right back to zero but the car will start we replaced the fuel pump and the relay and you can drive the car sometimes for a long distance before it dies and other times a short distance and then it shuts off.The car always starts right back up sometimes right away and other times within maybe 5 minutes of it shutting off.Any help on this would be great its driving me nuts........

Run your computer codes and see what comes up. If you don't have a scanner, either get one or see if your local auto parts store will check them for you. Most won't unless your Check Engine Light is on.

See what those that know more than me have to say. My question is, would this be a candidate for a crank position sensor?

MarkFire68 --

Is this car a recent purchase? When you made the fuel pump swapout, did you completely drain and flush the tank? What you describe sounds to me like the fuel pickup is being blocked by something ....

yea we drain and flushed the tank and even tryed another pump thinking the first one was bad and changed the crank sensor thinking it might have something to do with it.the starnge thing is with the key on the fuel pressure goes to 50 right away but then drops to zero but the car will start and then it reads 50 but when you drive it it just stops and then it takes a few cranks to restart.

I hope some others chime in here.

If it's not related to the CPS then my next question is. Is the replacement fuel pump sorced from GM or is it aftermarket. Over the years I've heard nothing good about aftermarket parts and Saturn. Not only Saturn I guess, a gal at work had her fuel pump replaced not long ago with a unit bought from Auto Zone. She was suckered into to paying labor 5 times before she got one that worked from a local Ford dealer. After a letter from a lawyer to the corner repair shop they returned her money.

Some fuel pickups have a filter on the end of the pickup tube (kinda looks like a fuzzy hair roller). Anyhow, over time, these things lose their rigidity, and will collapse under heavy flow, thereby cutting off the fuel. When the engine stops, the fuel demand stops, and the filter returns to proper shape ....
