I noticed I had trans fluid dripping from under my 2004 Ion 1, 5 speed manual. It appeared to be coming from the passenger side cv half has shaft input seal. I replaced that today and I just got back from a test drive and there’s fluid still dripping. I cleaned the under carriage before going out to clean off the fluid flung everywhere from before. There is no residue around the seal I just replaced. The driver side seal seems to be good. I took photos and will circle the area it keeps collecting. I’m hoping it’s not a gasket between the transmission and engine? By the way, isn’t there supposed to be a plug where that big hole is? I’m mechanically inclined, but I don’t know much about this part of the car. She’s my beater with a heater with 214K miles. Just trying to make it a bit longer.

That hole is there to allow for fluids to drain from the clutch housing portion of the transmission - so the fluids don't accumulate and get into the clutch facing. I am facing having to remove the transmission (again) on my '04 Ion to replace the slave cylinder. I have brake fluid (used in the clutch actuation lines) leaking from that hole, and the slave cylinder is the only component down there that has brake fluid. Transmission fluid leaking there means you have a seal leaking in the clutch housing portion of the transmission. The two most likely are the input shaft seal (coincidentally, part of the clutch actuation/slave cylinder) and an intermediate shaft seal, which is covered with a press-fit cap over the intermediate shaft bearing. I would guess the former. You may be able to use a bore scope camera up through that hole and see if you can pinpoint where the leak is coming from. Look especially below where the slave cylinder mounts against the wall where the input shaft comes through from the gearing portion of the transmission.
You have a leak at a gasket on the front of the trans. You will have to separate the engine and tranny and and seal the surfaces.

Sounds like I’m going to junk it or sell it as is. I don’t have the correct space, time, or experience to fix this part. Thank you for the response!

Thank you for the response. Sounds like I’m just going to sell it as is or junk it. I don’t have the experience or space for this type of challenge. She’s old, beat up, and rusty. I was just trying to get an another year out of her.
