Default Strange noise from 03 ion

I have an 03 ion that’s been making a weird noise coming from the engine. It gets pretty loud when I rev it up. It makes 2 different noises, one from the engine and one from a pulley. I am trying to figure out where each one is coming from and how to fix it.

Please, no double posting. Thanks.
That pulley noise may be worn bearings -- not sure which one it is on an Ion.

The engine noise is hard to make out in the video. Sounds like a lot of normal injector clicking but maybe some lifter tapping in there.

Please describe what you hear coming from where (more specifically, please) and we will try to help you out. Sorry for the delay in response.

My answers are guesses at this point pending further investigation.

sorry for the double post, I posted the first one and realized it was in the wrong spot and then it wouldn’t let me delete it. The noise seems to be coming from the and maybe a little back of the engine. It sounds like a click but it’s not a rod knock. I know it’s not normal because it didn’t make it before.

If it is at the belt end of the engine it may have a broken chain guide. The guide between the cams seems to loose the plastic parts as the chain stretches first. Have someone remove the valve cover and look at the chain guides. How many miles on your ride?

I think it may be a lifter tick. Does that make sense or no?

All the 2.2L Saturns that make that type of noise have had timing chain problems.

Is usually cause the timing chain is wearing or about to go? I am going to have it looked at soon.

Lack of proper oil changes causes the chain oiler to plug and not lube the chain. Then the chain starts to stretch and beat the plastic guides apart. The one between the cam looses the plastic part and the chain hits the metal part making the kind of noise you describe. Have someone remove the valve cover and take a look. It should be obvious where the noise is coming from.

So my local GM dealer said they were gonna charge $150 to just diognosis the problem. I’ve seen a lot of threads on being able to do the tensioner yourself? Although some people have the old one come apart and others have to tap the new one through the valve cove? Does anyone have any advice? Also how do I keep the chain from jumping?
