Saturn ion 2 won't start

i have a 2005 saturn ion 2 and it won't start. It does crank. But it will not start. I was running great and then went to start and it won't. We have change ICM and coil pack. Checked battery and it is good. Checked the fuel pump fuse and relay both checked good. Did the check for spark and no spark. Also checked fuel pressure and it is good. Please help

How many miles? Code check and compression check would be my next steps.

dadinda 10-13-2018 01:29 PM

only has 128000 mile and no codes. compression check good

What is the compression reading? Bought a 2.2 with a broken chain at 130,000 miles. Just want to make sure we don’t miss a step.

I will have to check my fsm when I get home but there is a ground strap to the valve cover. I don’t know if you will get spark without the coil pack screwed to the cover. I have never tried to check for spark on one of these.

Diagnosing a problem using factory service manual’s charts assumes that you have professional mechanic abilities and training. I can uncomplicate some of it for you.
What does your security light do? If the security light flashes while cranking the bcm is not allowing your engine to start. This is the first of four cranks but won’t start pages.
If the security light is not flashing then we can move on. Next is the crank position sensor, if the pcm does not receive a good signal from the crank sensor both fuel and spark are not enabled.
I will wait to hear back from you.

Thanks. The security light is like it always was, no flashing. It was missing real bad a while back we changed the coil pack first then the CPS and finally the ICM. I assumed they were good after the ICM fixed the problem and cleared the codes but we left them in place anyway. I still have the original CPS and will put it in next weekend. It seems to have a magnet that closes the contacts and sends a signal to the BCM ?

I wanted to mention the key switch. It was replaced in a recall a couple of years ago. A while after that it would not activate the starter at full throw. After sitting a while it worked fine. This happened about three times and just went away, Two days ago it did it again. It sat a while and would crank but not start. Maybe that's where the troubles are.

Thanks again and we will get back to you next weekend.

Gm is notorius for ignition switch problems across all product lines. If you have seen these problems before it is entirely possible that this is your problem.

dadinda 10-14-2018 06:54 PM

I saw a video of a guy changing a key switch module. I was in the bottom part of the steering column. I know it can cause no cranking but can it cause
no start?

I have had gm pickups loose power to the transmissions and everything else works fine. It has been ignition switch failures in the late 90s. I own a Saturn but have worked on Fords and Internationals since 04.

Do you have a code reader that gives live data? A reader that gives data will show rpm while cranking indicating the crank sensor is working. The one I bought was about $85.00, my Snapon red brick will not work on my can 06 Lincoln Navigator. These are strictly OBDII readers not manufacturer specific code readers. I can read live data and codes with the reader I bought from Napa.

Ok Thanks. Back to work. Will try to change the CPS this weekend and get back to you.

dadinda 11-03-2018 01:42 PM

Hello again,

Been busy. Finally got time to work on the Saturn. Got a new ignition switch and installed it. Nothing at all. No crank no start no passlock blinking nothing. Reinstalled the old part and we have crank again but still no start.

19bonestock88 11-03-2018 03:16 PM

Have you checked the crank position sensor? Without it your engine won’t start

dadinda 11-03-2018 04:02 PM

No. That is nexts

dadinda 11-04-2018 04:21 PM

Finally got it. A while back we had a miss. The code said CPS. We changed it but no go. It ultimately was the ICM but in the process of changing the CPS I broke off the keeper on the connector and it worked its way off. No CPS no start. Reconnected it and wrapped it with electrical tape. Hope it holds.

Thanks for the help.

Rubehayseed 11-05-2018 06:33 AM

Any way to use a zip tie on that connector? Much more secure than electrical tape.

19bonestock88 11-06-2018 08:05 AM

I agree there, if you don’t get a zip tie or something mechanical on there to hold the connector, you’ll be left with a no start condition again at some point, likely at the most inopportune time...

ion03 12-24-2018 01:13 PM

I had the same problem with my 03 ion. I took it to the dealer and they did two recalls on it. Ignition switch and infliction cylinder i think, and that fixed it.

dadinda 01-18-2019 05:00 PM

OK, 6 months later and no start again. Would the CPS pig tail coming lose but not completely off yet cause an engine miss fire condition?

Rubehayseed 01-19-2019 08:08 AM

Yes. Every sensor has to have a good connection. Fix the damn thing.

dadinda 01-23-2019 05:58 PM

I did. On there tight. Wont come off again.

Cool.
