Default PWR STR message 2004 Saturn Ion Level 3, 2.2L

Hi Everyone,

I'm facing problem with the power steering system in my 2004 Saturn Ion Level 3, 2.2 L.

I originally got this problem more than an year ago when I got the PWR STR message on the dash. I then replaced the fuse in the fuse box that's located near the engine. The problem came back a week ago when I went out dining with my friends. So I replaced the fuse again. The new fuse blew out in a couple of days only to be replaced by another fuse, which ALSO blew out. Now I'm driving my car without the power steering and it requires, as a lot of you must already be knowing, a lot of power from me.

Another "probably related" issue are the sparks I used to get under my steering wheel when the fuse was intact. I heard and saw the sparks for around a month before the first fuse blew off recently. I don't hear or see the sparks now mostly because there's no fuse to close the power steering electrical circuit.

I went to a couple of auto repair centers and the first reaction they give me is "power steering and fuse??? are you kidding me, they are not even related. What fuse are you talking about??" A couple of other wise mechanics have settled on around 100 dollars an hour to inspect the electrical system in my car.

The problem now is I am a student and would like to do it myself if it is really something as simple as DYI. Otherwise, I have no choice but to go to the auto repair guys and shell out a whole lot of $$$. I'm hoping some preliminary advice from you geniuses!

Thanks
Ravi

The power steering is covered under an extanded warranty by GM just for this issue. Call your nearest Chevy dealer with VIN in hand and they will pass on the information to you.

They are called

ION 1
ION 2
ION 3

No place in the name is the word "level" used

Hi,

I hate to say this, but my car is salvaged. I already called the GM/Saturn dealer and he buggered me off saying they don't give any warranty or recall support for salvaged vehicles!

So many time I felt my car doesn't deserve a Salvage title just because I felt it is so good!

Thats the way it's always been....warranty is voided once the car has been deemed totaled by an insurance company. It's now an out of the pocket repair. If you drop a washing machine down a flight of stairs why would Matag cover the damage under warranty?
