Default Bad Oil Leak - Need Help Locating It!

Hey Guys!

Been a while since I've come on here. My 2005 Ion 2 has been doing great for the past 20,000 miles and is now up to 165,000 miles! But I guess all good things must come to an end.

My 2.2L Ecotech has started a bad oil leak in the rear of the engine. Like I drive for 10 miles and she loses about 1/8 quart bad. I cannot see where it is coming from. It is coming from above the transmission, but below the exhaust manifold. There is no water in the oil so it is not the head. Also, it is a pressure leak. Meaning when it sits, I maybe get a drip every couple of minutes. But when revving, it is like a small river. Where ever it's coming from, it's leaking onto the transmission then comes down the forward right portion of the trans pan(front being side next to the engine).

I don't see how this can e the main seal. Is it? I've also read about the "foam casting" design having issues and it cracks letting oil through. Is this it? I just don't see what it could be because there is nothing back there according to diagrams. And it looks like I either have to drop the trans or take off the entire top end of the engine to get to it. Any engine gurus know what this is? Thanks!

I'm not familiar with that engine, but it could possibly be a leaking oil sending unit or oil pressure switch if you prefer to call it that. I don't know where it's located on that engine. Surely someone that's Ion friendly can tell you.

I'm stumped on this one. Unless it's coming from the exhaust manifold. Could be blow by and your gasket is shot?

Does someone have a detailed diagram of the 2005 engines? Is the oil sending unit located back there?

I love digging this **** up in the middle of the night.

I'm way too mentally gone to process it, though.

Saturn Part - 12635992 | OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT

Enjoy

That is my best bet on what's leaking. But, I'm not a mechanic.

HMMM you say back of the engine. Here is a video that shows the back side without the head attached. I'm not sure if it will help you or not. I would suggest getting under the car while it's idling and look for the leak.

I'm not sure if those three torque bit plugs are freeze plugs or if they open up to the oil jacket. Like I said you'll probably have to look from underneath while the car is running.
