2004 Saturn Ion 2 clutch issue
I have a 2004 Saturn Ion with 200k miles and a clutch issue. Originally it was having trouble going into 1st and reverse. Had the clutch and slave cylinder replaced and it seems the problem got worse. It will not go into gear with the engine running but will go through all gears with the engine off. With the engine running and the clutch pushed in, it will go into first if you force it, but it will creep forward even though the clutch pedal is in all the way. Clutch pedal itself feels fine and I am running out of ideas.
Your clutch hydraulic system still has air in it. The clutch is not being fully released, and with the input shaft still spinning the transmission will not allow you to engage any gear. Once moving, the synchronizers will allow you to change gears. If you start the car with the transmission in gear, the car will move slowly because the clutch is not fully disengaged.
I have just been dealing with the same issue, because I have just replaced the slave cylinder which failed. I put in a transmission 5 years ago and had a big learning lesson on bleeding the clutch system. It's a pita and requires PATIENCE. I've bled the system a half dozen times, and have it working now, but I suspect it still has a little bit of bubbles in there.
