'05 Saturn Ion 3 - Which engine do I have?

I know that I have a vin f (8th digit) car, but is there any way to figure out how the different things are ported without taking out the engine?

I kinda blew up my engine ( I think). I starved it on oil and it started knocking. I tried adding Lucas and a couple of other additives, but she's still knocking and I'm trying to see if it salvageable, but if it's not, I want to know if the engine I'm looking at will fit in my car without modification.

I'm still learning about the mechanics of cars and I really don't want to pull the engine and try to decipher what's the special limiter on it.

Thanks!

There are two different cylinder heads that could be in your car. With or without a port for exhaust gas recirculation. The other difference listed is whether the exhaust manifold is drilled and tapped for air injection. You can reuse your exhaust manifold so that does not matter.
All the L61 engines that I have or have worked on have the port for E.G.R. The port with a block off plate is at the end of the cylinder head nearest to the power brake booster. Look at a picture of a bare cylinder head on e-bay to see what the port looks like and then look at your engine.
If it is knocking it is junk, replace the engine. If you continue to drive it you will end up walking home.
Sorry but oil is life.

05 is a 2.2.

Head differences are covered above. But if you pull it from an 05 ion or cobalt youd be fine.

But if it's knocking, just replace it with another 2.2 02-06 amd you'll be fine. Few differences but nothing I can't talk yuh through

This is looking down on the cylinder head with the valve cover removed. The egr port is at the bottom of this picture with the 4 holes showing.

This is a picture of one without the egr port.

Alrighty thanks for the help the EGR port is basically like a little tail with a few holes in it?

Yes, and I don’t think any Saturn uses an egr valve. However this engine is used by many car brands and in many countries.

The s series used EGR valves but that is a totally different animal.
