Wiring Help
I have just received a Saturn Coupe dirt track car. I am working to clean up the wiring and get rid of anything that is not necessary. What can be removed without causing other issues or shorts and allow the function of the motor and transmission for racing? The car has a 98 motor, 95 trans and 93 wiring harness. Could I update the harness to post 96 to allow an OBD2 and easier tuning? Does someone have PCMs or wiring that I could acquire? If anyone could provide any other advice I am jumping into this not know much of the Saturns or the FWD dirt track racing. Thank you in advance, all feedback is appreciated
Trans MP3 is MP3.
93 wiring harness is obviously ODB1.
It wouldn't run unless it had an ODBI PCM. 93 or 94, as 95 had some differences from the earlier ones.
The ignition control module on OBD1 Saturns differs from the ignition control module on OBD2 Saturns so you must have an OBD1 ignition control module.
95 was the first year for solenoid actuated EGR valve. Before that it was vacuum controlled. I believe you can just pull it and block the ports.
I believe 98 was the first year for the smog pump on the S cars but double check. You can certainly remove that if it's there.
If you haven't already, have the differential pin welded in place. Too much wheel hop Will send it shooting through the trans case and you're done.
H Here's the part you don't want to hear. No one ever cracked the communications protocol for any of the S series PCMs. Consequently, there is no way to tune a stock PCM. Any mods you want to make must be done with a standalone unit. This is how all of the Saturns were turboed. Huge injectors, high flow fuel pump, custom fuel maps etc. There was never any aftermarket support. People had to fabricate their own turbo exhaust manifolds from the stock ones.
As for trying to swap in ODB2 wiring harness in place of the OBD1 that's in there, you don't really get anything.
Most of the general parts fit either 93 to 98 which is first and second generation or 93 to 2002 which is all three generations. 95 is somewhat of an outlier in many respects so if you are in junk yards, do your homework online to make sure everything you are pulling is truly compatible.
Oh and if you need to buy electrical parts do not buy them from advance or AutoZone. Buy Napa or use rockauto.com. just be ready for the $10 minimum shipping charge so order things in bunches.
You can only stop by and ask more specific questions. It's really hard for me to suggest things without seeing the car, what's connected, and what's not.
