Sc1 trans bangs to all gears when it shifts. Just bought that's the big issue. Runs well for 173000 but auto hits hard on shifts. Also needs ing lock cyl and tamper bolts for lose column. Any ideas on trans would be great.

 

Common S car auto trans issue.

Ask previous owner if teams has been maintained and/or repaired. They obviously knew about issue pre sale.

Check A/T fluid for proper level and color/burnt smell.

Likely needs a rebuilt valve body at minimum

Visit https://www.saturnfans.com and search on taat, valve body, reverse slam. There are a zillion existing posts on the issues with this transmission. Follow their diag steps and replacement guides.

Also possible issue with input shaft nut backing out.

While these are not terribly expensive DIY fixes,
be sure to assess the entire vehicle condition before you start putting money into it.

Does it burn oil? What was the oil level when you purchased the vehicle?
Service engine soon light on?
Engine compression?

All the little fixes add up.
