5 speed gremlin
I have a ''98 SC1 with a 5 speed, 200K. I have a problem with shifting into 1st at a dead stop. If I can roll the car a little in 2nd, I can get 1st engaged, otherwise I''m beating a dead horse. Also, the clutch engagement is about a 1/2" off the floor - is there any adjustment or bleeding of the clutch? One other problem - the thermostat was bad and replacing it has resulted in getting the low level/overtemp idiot light above the temp gauge. I refill the reservoir and the light is off for a few hundred miles. There is no external coolant leak, no internal leak to the oil pan, no leak in the heater/blower. My guess is a small leak in the head gasket to one of the cylinders, or perhaps a minor head crack to a cylinder. Am I close?

If that doesnt work, replace the resevoir tank.
Mightbe the shaft bearing on the waterpump starting to leak, or even a leak in the reservoir itself. Do not understand how the idiot light would be affected by changing the thermostat, unless it was a bad connection all along ...
Sorry, Gents, I didn''t explain the situation correctly.
Not even close. You have a sticking float in the coolant resevoir tank. Its very common. Drain the coolant until the tank is empty, remove it and wash it out with hot water and dish soap. Fill it, plug the holes and shake it until you can hear the float rattling around.
If that doesnt work, replace the resevoir tank.<! Signature >
The coolant level in the reservoir is dropping below the float switch due to a internal leak, that is why I get the low level/overheat idiot light. There is no coolant leaking external on the motor.
