Just got it. When you accelerate it cuts out and hesitates. If you back off
the gas a little it like catches up then takes off. It also wants to idle high
all the time no matter what
Great car, this problem is more annoying than anything else. I am sure I
am not getting the best MPG

I am thinking:
~ Plugs and wires
~ maybe fuel rail or something like that

any thoughts?
Thanks,
max

Just a quick thought here high idle combined with poor gas mileage possible vaccuum leak somewhere?

ECTS (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor) failure. Original resin tipped design fails and sends info to PCM that engine coolant temp NEVER is ice cold. PCM sets rich A/F mix indefinitely and keeps dumping gas.

Replace with 2nd gen BRASS style replacement. And REPLACE THE CONNECTOR TOO (corrosion on these connector contacts is a killer and WILL lead to incorrect temp readings from the newly replaced sensor). JUST DO IT.

Also follow up on vacuum leak possibility. Spray some throttle body cleaner around the intake manifold gasket area and where the throttle body attaches. Also check for cracked vacuum lines.

Great, thanks for the ideas..

~ Would the ECTS show a code?
~ Where is the ECTS located (good example of looking for service manual)
~ Any Ideas on cost for the ECTS?
~ Something I can replace myself?

thanks again

MaxSat,

It is quite possible a bad ECTS would show a code. P0112 through P0118 are the numbers to look for.

The ECTS is mounted on the right side of the engine (when viewed from the front of the car), and has two wires (yellow and black) running to it.

Average price (here in the US) is about $9.00usd

Yes it is an easy replacement, but you will need a deepwell socket of the proper size, and also some teflon tape to wrap the threads on your new sensor.

Good luck

In my experience, the most common ECTS problem (described above) doesn''t set codes because the PCM still reads the voltage drop across it (it is a resistor whose resistance changes with temperature) and infers the temperature from that voltage drop. So the PCM is still determining a temp it''s just a bogus temp.

As stated above, it''s a two wire sensor mounted in the driver''s side of the cylinder head.

Be sure to change with the engine cold, unless you enjoy burning yourself with hot coolant while holding a finger over the hole after you pull the existing one out....

As I indicated, REPLACE THE CONNECTOR ! Connector is dealer-only part and a bit pricey but convenient or you can get the same connector from an IAT sensor (Intake Air Temp) from a junkyard as they are identical-just get one without corrosion if you go the junkyard route.

Squeeze the connector to release....

Thanks

autozone - sensor - $8.99
Dealership - connector - $24.99

Still not bad if it fixes the problem.

I will report back saturday

thanks for the infoEdited by: sw2cam

BIGGER PROBLEMS

I thought tonight I would check the the car.

~ I let the car set for 1 hour ( was still extremely hot)
~ Checked the oil, it was fine (car sitting on level ground)
~ Checked the coolant (little low, Half of windshield washer fluid
container). Filled it back to where it should be
~ Thought I would check the spark plugs to make sure they were tight
and that I had the right size socket before sat, when I change the ECTS,
plugs and wires.
~ Standing in front of the car from drivers side to passengers side with
drivers side being plug 1 (for the sake of this post)
~ Plug 1 - No Problem
~ Plug 2 - No Problem
~ Plug 3 - No Problem
~ Plug 4 - When I pulled the rubber sleeve out of the chamber it was full
of oil. ( I freaked ) .

~ I took the plug out and let the oil drain back down in the engine
cleaned everything and put the plug back making sure the plug was tight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ I have always noticed the engine has a loud tapping sound ( indicates
problem). Sounds kinda like when the lifters are tapping in a V8
~ Plug 4 was tight when I took it out. I don''t know how oil could have
blown past it to fill the chamber where the rubber sleeve is.
~ when i started the car back up, it blew tons of blue smoke from the
exhaust. it never has done that before.
~ Curious, anyone know what a new engine cost or what it would cost to
rebuild this engine. I would hate to let this car go, the body and interior
looks like new.
~ I think the engine might be shot
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Max
Oil in the location you described indicates a leaking cam cover gasket and likely nothing more. Not a big deal at all to replace on these cars.
The blue smoke is from the burning of the oil which you said you let drain into the cylinder.....
Take a deep breath all is not lost.
Replace cam cover gasket.
