I have a 1997 SC2 2dr. My problem is, at times when starting, it takes 3 or 4 turns of the key to start the engine. Then maybe at another time, the car starts the first try.OR thecar has been started, but when put into drive/reverse, it may cut off. The most common is the several key turns.

Does this sound like a fuel problem, maybe filter or pump? Or does it sound like something else?

The car generally runs fine once it has bee started, no noticable bucking or loss of power. It is just the initial starting. Most start with first turn of the key.Edited by: rickatom

With the starting issue, does the starter motor engage and spin the engine over?

The other concern puzzles me.

It is not a starter problem. I read in another forum question, that it was probably the fuel pump. 1997 was abad year for them. The fuel is dumping back into the tank instead of staying in line. So the pump is having to pump fuel back up before it will start

where is the trap door for the sc2? all I could gather it is in the trunk or under the back seat.Edited by: rickatom

I have a 97SC2. When you go to start the vehicle, turn the key to "run". Wait for the hum of the fuel priming to end. Then turn to "Start".

Works like a charm for me.

Ok. I got you. Thought you were saying you had to turn the key several times for the starter to engage. GM has a common problem with all their full pumps to were they will start to bleed down. My cavalier has the problem. If you don't want to replace the pump, do as derf has stated. I do that rather than spending the $$$ to buy a new pump.

It also could be the ignition relay i think its called. It happened to me on my starion. Id turn the key about 4 or 5 times before the starter would turn. THen it got worse and worse. But then again other times it might start right up. IT cost me 240 and that was installed myself. Its the black box under the dash. I'm not sure of the exact name it seems to slip my mind.
