not sure if they are identical to the 2nd gen coupes, but you can take them apart GENTLY and clean up the contacts w some contact cleaner.
They will last for quite some time afterward.
The real problem is that the front outer plastic under the actual switch. Because of its shape, the switch is usually pulled up on or pushed down on in a partially horizontal direction.
This stresses the plastic in the front, which then cracks and falls away. This creates additional instability, leading to accelerated damage fo the switch. The contacts inside start to arc due to the misalignment and there is vaporized carbon everywhere.
Cool looking. Design ok -- just not designed to last 16 years of daily use
