Talking Warning: mechanic ****!

I finally am getting time to replace the 454 in my shop truck at work. The old engine has had a piston noise on float since I have been driving it. 14 years. This last July I took it to Northern California to work a fire and when I got back to Oregon it had terrible piston noise when warm all the time. 145,000 miles of dragging that 12,000lb truck around with 4.56 gears, it was ready for a break.

Fuel injected or carburetor, Andy? I'm just curious. When the industry went to throttle body from car, I thought that was a step up. Then it went from tbi to fuel injection. I think when that happened, a lot of places stopped doing carburetor rebuilds. Seems to me it's becoming a lost art/talent. I know I haven't done one in years except on a 2-cycle weed eater! Anyway, have fun with that boat anchor. I sometimes miss rebuilding an engine. Sometimes! LOL

The truck is a 1995, the last year GM trucks had TBI. In 96 they went to multiport injection and stepped up to all the OBDII sensors. This system is pretty simple it has one O2 sensor and one cat. It gets mid 7 mpg combined use and can just get into the 8s if only on the highway. It is 4wd and is great in the snow with chains on both ends! It was scheduled to be replaced next year, but transport support vehicles tend to slide down the list as Wires rigs are more important.

It lives! Put about 20 minutes of break in time at 1500 rpm today. I will set the timing and finish it up on Tuesday.

That is an awesome work truck!

Been a while since I messed with a big block; or even a carburetor for that matter. I've been hard pressed to find a big block at the local junkyard(s) to rebuild for my C20. Been thinking lately about going the LSx route and drop a LQ4/NV4500 in there and call it a day. I just have to research the cheapest way of doing that.

Put 400 miles on it Monday getting ready for winter storms. It does like fuel, but runs well the truck weighs right at gvw of 12,000 lbs. It has 4:56 gears and got 7mpg towing on the long hills on I5 in Southern Oregon. It is loaded for winter storm duty, lights and wipers etc. I can build all the hydraulic hoses our trucks take and it has a new Miller welder/generator. Headed South today chasing the snow and wind storm and shop coverage in the snow zone of our company.
