classic projects
I removed all of the bearing caps, except the main bearings in the front and back. The main bearings that I pulled seem fine, the cylinder walls seem fine, the cam lobes look a little pitted around the edges, most of the rod bearings are a little pitted, except cylinder one, which has deep groves, and cylinder seven, which had spun, the tangs were gone, and its journal in the crank shaft had lost as much as 1/16 in compared to cylinder 8 next to it.
IMHO, if it were mine, I'd pull the engine and do a complete overhaul with a new crank, rods and bearings just to make sure. Have the cylinder walls honed after having the block dipped too. That will help to break in the new rings you'll put on the OEM pistons.
With the vehicle now in our steep driveway, pulling the engine would be too dangerous, and with the money running out (as usual), only what is absolutely necessary may be replaced, especially that the saturn needs control arms before the sway bar pulls out of its bushings...
