Howdy,

I'm new to this forum. I don't own at Saturn at the moment, but I bought a 1999 SL2 new in 1999. I only had it about 3 1/2 years (and 68k or so) before I traded it on a Mazda Protege ES. I really liked the car, I never had a problem with it, and it got fantastic gas mileage, 40 MPG regularly on the highway. I have fond memories of the car. Recently I was going through some old papers and found both the window sticker and a 1999 Saturn brochure. Ah memories. Below is a picture of the sticker. For giggles I decided to run a CarFax report on my old SL2. Its still going (or at least it was in October of last year when it was last inspected and the registration was renewed), with 185k miles.

Anyway, I'm looking for a small car to drive back and forth to work so I don't have to burn buckets of gasoline driving the mini-van that I have to haul my kids around. I'm thinking about a '99 Saturn, just because that is the year I had. I'm undecided on SL, SW, or SC though.

If you're going to haul kids - I'd opt for an SW2, if you can find one .........

I'm actually looking for something inexpensive to just haul me back and forth to work that could transport the kids in a pinch. If we really need to take the whole family somewhere we use the mini-van. I just don't want to waste the gas it uses, not to mention the wear and tear, just driving me around. Still, if I find the right SW2, I'll get it. I'm kind of leaning toward the SC right now since I would have gotten an SC2 back in '99 if I could have afforded the extra money. Since the '99 SCs are 3-doors, hauling the kids would be possible.

The SW2 I looked at was just too expensive for the issues it had. $3650 and it sounded/felt like it needed new motor mounts, plus the airbag light was on. It was a '99 with 124k.

The SC2 I really wanted to see, '99 with 87k, was sold. I was really interested in that one because it didn't have any power stuff to break (windows, locks, etc), had low mileage, and of course the DOHC engine.

The other two SC2s I looked at both had sunroofs and therefore didn't have enough headroom for me. One was a very nice loaded '97 with 88k, but with the headroom issue, plus the ABS light being on, I passed.

I looked at '96 SL2 with 165k. The "service engine soon" light was on, the clutch was about 3/4 burned out, the clearcoat on the plastic panels was peeling off, and the interior was in pretty bad shape. Guy wanted $2150. Needless to say I passed.

I ended up getting a very nice base model '99 SL for $2900. I didn't want power anything, so the SL was perfect. It has 99k and a clean CarFax report. Here are some pics:
