Red face Cooling fan woes!

Hello out there to all you Saturn freaks. I'm a newbie from the Land of Enchantment. I've got a 2001 Saturn L200 with under 50K miles on it. It was a great gift from the family of a long time dear friend who no longer drives; however maintained it to the max when she did. (for about 30K miles) I drive it about half the time . . . great gas mileage, good handling & up until recently pretty bulletproof. A couple of months ago it evolved or devolved from a dependable quiet ride into a still dependable; but very continuously noisy ride. My cooling fan or fans run continuously until I turn the car off . . . welcomed silence. I drained, flushed and refilled the radiator, replaced the temperature sensor, replaced the module with the cooling fan relays to no avail. Temperature gauge indicates a normal temp, maybe a little slow getting there. It runs fine other than the noise. I have not replaced the thermostat yet thinking maybe the recently replaced module with all the cooling fan relays might be faulty. Any ideas from you any amigos out there who've experienced the same problem I'd appreciate hearing from. Thanks and adios for now. Madmack . . .another Saturn freak.

Welcome to the forum!
Your problem is the thermostat has lost it’s rubber lip and cannot control the temp correctly. You will need to replace the thermostat and clear your codes to fix the cooling fans.

Thanks for the shout out and the welcome, Andy. I'm looking forward to being a forum member! You've got an 02 L200 with 210K . . . Wow! A few challenges over the years with that one I'm sure and it's still kicking. I love this this car. My daughter's driven it for the past couple of weeks while I did some work on her 2004 Accord (160K miles) She didn't want to part with it. Too bad. I've got it back and will replace the thermostat today and clear the codes. Thanks again. I'll follow up with the results when I finish up. Enjoy the day!

Question Cooling fan woes?

Andy, is there much variance in the quality of thermostats out there? What's worked for you and your Saturn? Would you opt for an OEM over brands I can get at NAPA, Autozone, etc; for a little over half the price. Thanks again for the help. Mm

I always purchase the better quality thermostat if there is a choice. Most are Stant and the higher price ones maintain temperature better.

Thumbs up

Andy, You're the Man! I drained and flushed cooling system and replaced the thermostat on the 2001 L200. I filled with a 50/50 of Dex coolant, cleared the codes, cranked it up and it's running great and quietly . . . no constant noise from those previously, continuously noisy spinning fans.
I appreciate your help, amigo! .Thank you. Enjoy the day! Madmack
