I am new to the site so if this isnt the place for this post, please forgive me.
MY girlfriend has a 2001 L series saturn with the 2.2L engine. The other day, it just stopped running. We suspected the timing chain had broke. Upon inspection, we realized the front cam was not turning but the timing gear is. Her car is 125 miles away right now, so I presently cant give anymore information about it. Has anyone ever experienced this?

 

The timing gear is attached to the camshaft. If the timing chain broke, the gear on the crankshaft would still turn, but the gear on the camshaft wouldn't. If the cam gear is turning, then the timing chain isn't broken. I'd take a look at the fuel pump fuse. Too little information to give a definite answer. Have her turn the key to the start position and see if she can hear the fuel pump come on. It will only run for a couple of seconds while it puts pressure on the fuel line. So, it may help to have someone open the gas cap and listen while someone else turns the key on. That way, you'll have two sets of ears instead of one. Good luck with it.

 

likely timing chain failure. There was a recall on some of the early L series 2.2's for that---check the NHTSA site with vin in hand to see if your car was included or already repaired.

If you decide to fix, there is a new chain and guide design as a result of the failure, so replace it all while you're in there.
