What is the compression? Is it the within 10% across all four cylinders? What was your procedure for testing it?

 

well i brought it to the dealer and they said the compression tested at 31 % . they said it needed a valve job 4 to5 hundred dollars. they also said that the lower end may need some work that they couldn't tell until they tore it down. one question i have is can you get a accuratecompression test if lets say the head gasket is bad. i hate to scrap the car if it only needs a head gasket and a valve job.Thanks for tour help Mike

 

First thing I would do is do a compression check for yourself. A compression tester is cheap and its very easy to do. Service limit for these engines is 185psi.

To do a compression check, get the engine to operating temperature. The remove all the spark plugs and remove the IGN1 fuse from the underhood fuse box. Install the tester in the first cylinder. It simply screws in place of the spark plug. Make sure its snug then get in the car and crank the ignition. Cycle the engine 10 revolutions then check the number on the gauge.

Repeat for the other three cylinders. PSI should be above 185 and all four cylinders should be within 10% of one another.
