the last time i encountered a problem of that sort, a new fan belt replacement did the whole trick.

If the noise goes up and down with enging rpm it's probably the alternator on its way out. If it's not a squeel? when the bearings start to go in the altthey make a good whinnnig sound. There is another bearing on the idler pully, located right below the top mount, that can cause a whine also when it time is almost up.The alt should be putting out about 96 amps under load so if you get it tested at a shop and the say its look ok make sure the amperage is in the high 80 at least. when the bearings start to go the alt usually puts out about 60-70 amp ok for some cars but not for saturns.
