I have a 96 sl1 had major problems with a cracked head last year fixed ran great for a year, now my gas mileage has gone way down and it moves like a slug. what does a tune up entail, I would like to get the air filter that you wash K&n will that work on my car do I need to clean anything the garage up the street wants to charge me possible 200plus for a tune up, I bought sparkplugs and wires I know not to get them crossed I just need a little help on what else can I do to improve the running of the car thanks for your help in advance and my ses light comes on and off mybe once a month it comes on for a week or so and then goes off I thinks it's the o2 sensor waiting for it to come back on

 

Sounds like you're off to a good start.


Plugs and wires are good, like you said just be sure not to cross the wires. Also be sure to properly gap the spark plugs before installing them. K&N does make a filter for you car too, the part number is 33-2055. That would also help. You should probably replace both O2 sensors too (One in the exhaust manifold and on next to the catalytic converter). Be sure to keep your oil changes up to date.


I alsosuggest running a good fuel system cleaner through the engine too. I typically use 'Seafoam'. Just dump a can into your gas when you fill next time. It will clean you injectors, fuel lines, help break up carbon build up, and evaporate any water or moisture that has built up in you fuel system.


Don't forget to check the basics too, like fluid levels, serpentine belt, fuel filter, pcv valve, etc.

 

Nothing is going to improve the driveabilty of the car long term if you do not find the problem first. Your getting a SES light. Start with that. Don't just throw parts at it in hopes that something is going to fix it.
