strangeness Monroe strut replacement on 97 SC2

Hey,

Anyone replace their S car stock struts with Monroe Sensatrac's?

I purchased the 71924 STs for the front and the 71925 ST's for the back

The back 71925 ST's went fine.

The front Monroes 71924 seem to have an overall shorter piston travel (distance from top of piston to lip for bottom of spring).

Consequently, in order to reinstall the mounting plate (with bearing) and the rubber bearing support that goes between the mounting plate and the top of the spring, I had to further compress the spring.

The result (as the laws of physics tell me) is that the spring is now under more static tension since it is under additional compression not there under stock conditions.

The result is a bunch of clunking (presumably because the strut can't compress due to the spring compression) and squealing from the top of the strut tower, which I assume is due to the bearing being under so much tension that it can't move and the rubber support is actually moving instead.

Anyone else had this problem?

I don't use Monroe either (personal choice).......

I stumbled upon a Monroe spec manual with lengths of everything so I will pull them out, likely find they do not meet spec and are likely stamped with the right part number but are NOT the right part.

Then I'll order some KYBs like I did for my 95. I was trying to get a smoother ride in the 97 vs the 95 -- all I got was a bunch of sheeeet apparently

OK,

Replaced fronts with KYB GR-2's and except for a bit of spring rubber squeal on the front right (I'm using the monroe mounts with the bearings since I already bought them) things are fine. Ride is fine-- not the jarring crap with the monroes.

Yes, I made sure to reassemble with the rubber in the exact same location it was on the spring when I pulled it.
No I did not over torque the top mounts.

Any ideas?

Any one want a set of Monroe struts---suitable for most any couterweight or large-object slingshot application?
