Slight rattle
If you do swap in a 5-speed, you will probably need to put in a new clutch. Shifter bushing failure is guaranteed at some point in the car's life. There are many options but apparently even a used set of OEM Saturn shift cables is better than the aftermarket cramp because the length is wrong for the doorman cables. I've recently seen others, don't know about them.
There are many DIYs about Auto to manual swamps in the S Series. I can't see your original post so I don't remember what year it is but if it is 99 or up it has a BCM and therefore the transmission would also need to be able to communicate in a manner other than the older transmissions. Also you will probably want to match the dohc manual. Lastly but not really, you will probably have to have the bCM flashed.
Look for DIYs by Richpin (ton of Saturn YouTube videos as Richpin06a I think. Also look for posts from low Saturn.

If you call
[fabricating new mounts under the hood, rerouting the entire wiring harness for the 2.2 throughout the sw2, repinning connectors and or change and connector styles as required, PCM BCM and probably TCM replacement, transmission and torque converter swap to match the 2.2 rather than try to mate the S series transmission to the ecotec, and a whole bunch of stuff I can't even think of right now]
Not a whole lot of work, then yes.
Otherwise no it is not simpleI'm sure it's been done. Lsj s lnf s, V8 rwd..... They've all been done and everything in between.
Anything can be done with time knowledge and money. The question is, do you have all three and does it make sense.
