GM part #20863685 is discontinued! Now what. Key stuck
Hello. New to the forum and looking for help. 2008 Vue key stuck in ignition-acc position. Shift control assembly discontinued! Any ideas on bypassing?
thanks Supra! Will try and see if I can get that switch. Unless someone on this site knows the part number for the switch I will pull the shifter out and see if I can get a replacement
I have changed three of these over the years since 2008. My son drove the car for the last six years. He started experiencing the same issue and would say that when the key would get stuck, if he waited a while, then he would be able to turn (unlock) the key and get it out. So, I took the entire shifter out and tested it out. I found the issue on this particular one to be the white lubricating grease (see pic below) used in the lever mechanism. When it gets old, it becomes gummy and sticky. So when the car is put in park, the lever that makes contact with the metal actuator moves up very, very, very slowly. So the key remains locked until the lever is all the way up making contact with the metal actuator. Hope that helps.
Old grease gets Gummy and sticky and prevents the lever from going up fully to push the metal on the activating device.
So, what's the solution? Clean out the old grease and put new grease in?
It might be both. I'd definitly clean the grease first. If the plastic rod is quickly pushing the metal lever all the way up and making contact with the sensor, that should fix the issue. Unless, of course, the sensor itself is not functioning properly. That's my take on it. And to think Dealers were charging $200+ to change the whole assambly when they could have just cleaned the grease....
