Engine swap need help
I have an 06 Saturn Vue and I just swapped it for an 07 Saturn ion engine which uses the new crank sensor and cam sensor and coil on plugs but it won't crank does anyone have any ideas PLZ HELP

What was 06 engine?
Engine won't .crank (spin) or won't fire? What's the issue w the crank sensor being different? |
I have a 2006 Saturn Vue the original motor jumped timing. So I found a really clean 2007 Saturn ion motor I put it in but the 07 uses a digital crank sensor and a cam sensor where as the original 06 did not .

That’s the problem, you used the 07 engine... the PCM doesn’t know how to interpret the signal from the newer crank wheel... with no crank position signal there is no spark or fuel... |
This is a stretch, but if you know someone who is good with digital to analog conversion circuits, they might just be able to build you a converter for the new digital crank sensor signal to the analog equivalent of of what the 06 PCM is looking for.
That is only if the digital sensor is triggered by the same reluctor ring on the camshaft to create the pulses. You would need to know what the output of the 07 digital signal is supposed to be in order to create the analog equivalent signal for the 2006 PCM. Since the new digital sensor fits the 2007 engine, AND can generate the pulse is needed from what is on the crank of the 2007 engine you MAY be able to get away with a 2007 PCM running the 2006 engine. I have no idea what else is different. This is a complete guess on my part. Bonestock may have a better idea as to whether this has a chance of working. Do not spend a dollar until it is confirmed one way or another. |
I thought I read that the 07+ had variable cam timing and a different tooth count on the tone ring for the crank sensor. This requires more research. I am afraid you need to repair your 06 engine. |

The 07 L61 didn’t have VVT, but it did have a cam position sensor to enable coil on spark ignition... the issue is that there is so much difference between 06 and 07 that the OP would have been better off to find an 04-06 engine than the 07... cant use 07 PCM, as I think it’s wildly different than the 06, or at least it is in the ION, expect to spend dozens of hours rewirig the engine side control harness and that’s assuming you could get a wrecked 07 Vue as a donor... Better off to remove the 07 engine, post it for sale, and find an 06 engine to drop in... OR take out the 07 engine, remove the crankshaft and the one from the 06 engine, and switch them... put the crank sensor from the 06 on the 07 engine to match the 06 crankshaft... then figure out how to mount the original ignition cassette in the 07 valve cover(doesn’t have provisions for mounting the cassette but an 06 valve cover won’t work on the 07 head) OR visually inspect the pistons on the existing 06 engine and have new valves installed in the head(provided the pistons aren’t damaged) and do a timing chain kit... |
The crank sensors appear to be very different. They mount differently and the length of the sensor are different. Unless I had both in front of me I don’t know if the cranks will fit in the blocks. Still easier to repair the 06 engine especially if it is now out. They usually just bend all the valves and don’t hurt the pistons. I had about $700 in parts on the last one. That included water pump, hoses and OEM Cloyes parts. |
So the OP would have to repair the 06 engine or find another... |
