Yr2000 SL2 Engine Idle Speed Issues

Hey all, new to the forum, thought I would provide you with a challenge.

I own a SL2 Sedan, and lately, the idle speed has been way off. Meaning, sitting at 2000-RPMs way off. When I start the car, she turns over, and revs up to 2300 RPMs, then drops down to ~1000RPMs after a 5 second descent. From then on, while driving, it will never go below 2000RPMs when the clutch is pushed in/car is in neutral gear coasting. Only when I come to a COMPLETE STOP does the engine begin the 5-second decent down to ~1000RPMs again. I openly admit I know nothing about the mechanics of cars, but my DIY grease monkey father has no idea. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, and please feel free to ask questions to get a better understanding of the issue. Thanks thanks thanks!

Start by cleaning the throttle body INSIDE and out.

SWCam, thank you SO MUCH! For the past 16 months I have had this car, it has NEVER ran so smooth as after my father and I cleaned my throttle body yesterday! The inside was completely black, and had about 1/16th of an inch of carbon/tar inside the whole assembly. I like to drive 'hypermile-er'-ish, so I don't do high RPMs, so I don't burn the gas properly, I guess. My father said he has NEVER seen a throttle body look that bad. Thank you so much. Such a cheap fix for a big issue. Thank you everyone!
