I have a 1992 SL2 that needs a cat converter. It is a California model so it may be a different one than the other states.(?)

I went to Midas and they say it is illegal for them to install an aftermarket cat converter, I have to get one from the dealer: The dealer says:

The part cost is $900

The part is discontinued and can''t be found anyway. His computer shows ZERO stock anywhere.

Where can I get one that I can put in that will work? Anyplace to get info on this? I could install an aftermarket one if it''s an equivalent to get it to pass smog.

This car will have to be junked if I can''t find a cat converter.

Have you tried the local wrecking yards ??

NO, I figured I would get one as crappy as mine since the car is 16 years old. I was hoping you guys knew where to get an aftermarket cat converter.

Unless one of the parts dealers here on the forum has one for you, the only spot that comes readily to mind is eBAY Motors ...

Junkyards here in California dont sell catalytic converters.

Heres an ebay link.

Not only that, the owner of the Midas muffler shop said Kali recently changed the law and they can no longer install universal aftermarket cats even if they work. It has to be an exact OEM duplicate that is CARB certified and they don''t exist for this car.

Thanks for the link, but the text says that it is not legal for California. Any idea what "OBD II" means and what the difference is to the kali version?

Would this one fit in and work or is it missing some air fittings or something?

Low Saturn 01-13-2009 04:02 PM

OBDII = On Board Diagnostics 2 programming in the vahicle PCM (1996+ cars)

You have OBDI, doesnt apply to your car. The listed catalytic converter isn''''t an OBDII converter anyway. If it was it would have a provision for a second O2 sensor. Which it doesnt.

They either left that text there accidently or they want to make sure you dont put that converter on an OBDII car.Edited by: Low Saturn

Just did some searching and the person at Midas is either uninformed, stupid or both.

It its completly legal to install an aftermarket catalytic converter in your car as long as it has an ARB number. Plenty of major manufactures make them. And since Midas does exhaust repair, they can get them.

From the California Air Resources Board website:

"The ARB adopted revised regulations and evaluation procedures in October 2007 for the approval of new aftermarket catalytic converters sold in California. The requirements apply to all new aftermarket converters produced for sale or sold in California after January 1, 2009. The requirements also sunset provisions allowing the sale of certified used catalytic converters beginning July 10, 2008. This means that no used converter can be legally advertised for sale, sold, or installed in California after this date."
