while working on the back of the engine a bad vacuum line was found. No wonder the idle was always a little high.
This is the line that runs from the intake manifold to the fuel vapor evap canister relay.
I had an extra intake manifold that was pulled from the junk yard that i was going to pull the hose from. The hose on it was worn in the same place too!
The hole was caused by engine vibration rubbing the vac line with the throttle cable housing.
Saturn factory workers must have routed the hose on the wrong side of the throttle cable housing.
Or the engineers did not use adequate cable management.
So if your car idles a bit high, you might want to check that line.
I put some rubber fuel line over the hose i had in the garage at the contact point to protect it from getting worn thru. . It was just scuffed and not worn through.
You can use a heat gun to make your own preformed hose.
This is the 1/4" nylon hose that is part of the three hose assembly that plugs into the throttle body.
I'm going to check mine. I very recently had a similar discovery on my 97 SL1. It was the rubber hose that connects the Charcoal Evap Canister's hard line at the firewall to the Evap Purge valve relay. Completely rotted and disintegrating. Its interesting to see a fellow Saturn Owner have a similar issue to mine within just a few days.
That hose is actually two hoses and a nylon connector, the shorter molded hose that that goes on the relay has a smaller diameter where it slides onto the relay and the larger diameter gets pushed onto a ****** nylon connector. Then you have the longer piece that goes from the nylon connector to the pipe. The pipe edge can cut into the hose so that is another thing to watch for.
It is a 92..... I don't think the engineered the car to last this long. In fact I know they didn't. So keep proudly driving your Saturn around.
Young kids think it's a foreign car. They have no idea what Saturn was as a car company. Sometimes I bet young kids at a fast food checkout window if they can tell me what type of car I'm driving without looking down at the badge. I give them 5 seconds, a slow 5 seconds. If they get it, I put a 10 in their tip jar.
