I came home from work yesterday in my 2002 Sl1 with 85,000 miles and the drive was fine. When I backed my car into the garage I heard a klunk type of noise when I switched from Drive to Reverse. When parked in my garage I then heard a humming type noise from my engine area. Went and got my AutoTap and had a P0706 code appear, (transmission range sensor circuit range). After awhile, the humming went away while I was in Park. I shifted gears and this is what happened.....

From Park to Reverse....Small Hum and then nothing

From Reverse to Nuetral....Continuous Hum

From Nuetral to Drive.... 2 Small Hums and then nothing.

From Drive to 3rd..... Nothing

From 3rd to 2nd..... Continous Hum

Woke up inthe morning and have not heard any humming noise. Transmission problems of some sort...any suggestions????

A loose shaft nut under the end casing can cause the reverse slam. Tightening the nut before the problem gets worse may help the transmission last a few more years.
