Stock radio install

Hey Saturn! I have a question: my car came with an aftermarket CD player when I bought it, and I just obtained an OEM deck, installed it, and it works beautifully. That was yesterday. Heading to work tonight the car wouldn't start (battery I think). Now I have to replace the battery here soon anyway, but would the "new" deck cause issues? And, question 2: is the clock always on? Thanks!!

If it's like most stock radios that I've ever had with a clock, then, yes, it's always on. How else would you know what time it is? I doubt that the clock would draw enough power to kill your battery that quickly. Is there any chance you may have left the interior lights on? They'll kill a battery overnight for sure.

Ha, I should have clarified. The clock is on with no key. The radio itself won't function, but the clock is always on, just sitting in the garage telling itself what time it is, haha. And no interior lights, been removed. Maybe I should have been clearer earlier, sorry.

Hmmmm, that is odd. I wish I knew more about electronics so I could help you out, but I'm an electrical idiot!

OK -- There's three different voltage wires that need to be hooked up for the system to function properly:

1) Yellow wire ... Hooked to 10A RADIO (IGN) fuse --> hot when key is ON
2) Orange wire ... Hooked to 10A RADIO (BAT) fuse --> hot at all times
3) Orange wire ... Hooked to 5A CD (RIA) fuse --> hot at all times

All fuses/connections noted above are on the Instrument Panel Fuse Block (I/P FB) inside the car

clock is indeed on with key out.

was the stock wiring harness left behind by the folks that did the aftermarket install?

pc12nut 09-14-2011 08:08 PM

The original harness was left in, yes. An adapter was clipped to it to mount in the rear of the aftermarket deck. The deck installed and works like a charm...I'm replacing the battery tomorrow anyway, so hopefully it was just a freak coincidence. Thanks for the info!
