I purchased a 1996 SL with 176,000 miles on it and the car runs good. The problem I have is, after the engine heats up the somethng is squeeking very bad. I can accelerate and the squeeking stops. I knew the previous owner and I know he replaced a couple of pulleys and since I purchased it, I replaced the tension idler and belt. the transmission hesitates when going into reverse and sometimes shifts hard when changing into passing gear. I added Lucus transmission treatment to the tranny and it did seem to help some on the shifting. Someone told me that it could be the tourque converter. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

If you are having problems with shifting and hesitation going into gear, I would definately change the filter and fluid. Does the squeek stop or get worse when you put it in reverse? If so I would have a trans specialist take a look at it. Most problems with hesitation and shifting are due to a pluged filter though. The plugged filter won't allow fluid back to the pump soon enough to make a quick responce. Trans fluid and filter should be changed every 30,000 miles regardless of what the manufacture specs call for. If your car has not had this done at all, and with 170+k miles, there could definately be damage to the internal pump in the Torque Converter, which would explain the squeeking at running temp. Hope this helps.Edited by: answerman
