Smoking fan speed selector
 

I have an 02' SL1 with a strange problem, so I appeal to those with more wisdom than I! After an hour of operation the fan speed selector for the heat controls while in the off position will start to smoke as though it is shorting out. When this happens I simply turn the fan switch to any selection other than off and the smoke subsides. I believe the switch is going bad but wanted to know if anyone else knew of a different cause. And if I'm correct , what is the best way to gain access to the switch for replacement? Any help would be much appreciated!

what about the fan itself, does it work as it should?

Yes! The fan works fine as well as the separate speed selections on the switch itself. I think the switch is just worn so that current passes across the switch in the off position with enough resistance to create the kind of heat required to create the smoke. I think it will get worse until the switch shorts out completely. At this point I would just like advice on the best way to get into the dash so I may see for myself what's going on?

Are you sure its smoke and not steam?
