Hi There -

We've just bought a 1991 SL1 for my wife, and she loves the car. We've driven it about 1,000 miles, but in the last 100 or so the car has started losing water.

Basically, when it reaches slightly higher than normal temperature, maybe after switching off or idling in traffic, it blows about a quart of water out through the radiator expansion cap.

The car never overheats, there is no sign of head gasket failure (water in oil etc) and everything else is absolutely fine.

I suspect a weak radiator cap blowing out at too low a pressure, but can anyone give me more info?

Cooling fan coming on ??????? should come on at the 3/4 mark or when the A/C is on.Edited by: sw2cam

Yes, the cooling fan comes on right on the 3/4 mark as it should, but the wanter vents through the cap well before that.

I've kept the ignition switched on after turning off the engine to see if it's overheating AFTER the engine's off, but it's not, it never gets above 3/4 even on a hot day in traffic.

I'm still thinking old radiator cap.....??

check your thermostat, and then change your cap. thats about all i can suggest.
