Shifter Bushing nightmares
 

The plastic bushing that keeps the shifter and linkage connected in my 99' SL1 broke, and i have been unsuccessful in finding a replacement part, or an aftermarket fix. is there anywhere i can get something to fix it permanently.

Broke on my 97 2 days ago....

Go to eBay and search for "saturn shifter cable bushing".

I ordered the stainless steel replacement--the choice is yours.

I think im gonna try a toyota windshield wiper bushing first, and if that doesnt work, the stainless 1. thanks for the help.

Generic windshield wiper bushings are a great substitute for the original plastic shifter bushing. they are 2 dollars and are in the "help" section of any autozone. they take a little pursuasion to get them in but they do work. The best way to install it is to put a clamp around the bushing and shifter and force it into place with the clamp. you may have to prod it a bit with a flat head screwdriver to get it in, but once it is in it stays.

The bushing break because the the cables have stretched ..... meaning they are now to long and that puts more torque on the bushing and they break. Buy new shifter cables and fix it right. If you don't want to do that we don't want to hear you whine about it not working correctly.

stainless steel bushing replacement installed and seems to work fine...have replacement cable ends in trunk as insurance against cable loop end failure

You might touch base with the road-rally wise segment there at your college ... they might have some ideas about beefing up the cable ends (or even the cables themselves) if you plan on using the vehicle 'hard' ....

thanks for the helpful input. My plan is to drive the car till the engine dies, then hot rod it by tearing it completely apart, and putting a small block chevy in it, and making a touring/drag car out of it. should be cool.

I ended up ordering the Plastic one from NAPA (figured 165k on this one was satisfactory in my book) but this guy looks like he machines metal ones.

The NAPA part number is BK 6201411
