Rough Idle

Hey everyone...

Trying to narrow it down here...have done a search, and after everything I've read...trying to narrow it down. I have a 01 SL2 manual and just a few days ago it started revving up between shifts and sometimes at stop signs or stoplights it would start climbing...2000, 2500...probably higher if I let it! I would just shut the car off and restart it and that seems to fix it for a very short time.

So, do I just start replacing stuff...like the IAC, then the Coolant Temp Sensor, then the TPS...doesn't help that over the last few days here in MN the high has been -5...and without a garage...

The first thing you need to do is run the codes on it and post your results. You start shotgunning parts at it and it could cost you a lot of money. If you don't have a code reader, then your closest auto parts store can check them for you. Free service at Autozone, Advance or O'Reillys

Sure just start replacing stuff. Sounds like the right way to go about it to me.

Those codes will give you direction as to what "stuff" to replace .... unless you got enough cash to shotgun it -- which is not a good idea

having lived and driven saturns through seven wisconsin winters, I can remember several times when the car just seemed to need to jump the idle up between shifts while I was trying to drive it when it wasn't fully warmed up. I always attributed it to a crazy rich air fuel mix, MAYBE (retrospectively) from a defective ECTS.

I'd start with a good throttle body cleaning and be sure to get that little hole at the bottom. Check for free movement of the throttle plate

Thanks derf...I know what you mean about it not being warmed up...but this was happening after definitely being warmed up...driven for like 4 plus hours. Funny thing is today, it broke 35 degrees here in MN and the car ran fine HAHA!! Maybe coolant temp sensor...also OceanArcher and Rubehayseed...I'll be getting the scanner here sooner than later...hopefully by Tuesday!! I'll keep ya updated!!
