Replacing Wheel Bearings?
 

I have a 2002 Saturn SL2 with 99,xxx miles on it. Took it to a mechanic for an evaluation of a constant whirring/humming/not really grinding but for lack of better word, noise (in the front end) that increases with acceleration. Mechanic says that it's both front wheel bearings and quoted me at about $500 to replace.

Looking to do it on my own (for about half the price, I know a guy who knows a guy), is it fairly easy to replace? Are there any special tools required to fix it? Does anybody know of any websites/links that could show me exactly how to do the job? Breaks, rotors, and caliper pins were all replaced in November 2008. If you've done the job, are there any tips you could provide me with?

I recognize your description well, as I had to have the bearings replaced on my wife's Saturn while we were on travel. The cost seems about right, as we only needed one side, and that cost us a bit over three hundred. Guess they are giving you "quantity" pricing (lol). Any "special tools" that you will need are usually available at your local AutoZone for a loaner/rental fee/deposit. Make sure that your guy (who knows a guy) is familiar with Saturns ......

Did he quote you on the bearings alone or the hubs too? If the bearings are sufficiently wrecked, he may not be able to get them out of the hubs -- thus requiring new hubs. Unfortunately, you won't know till you get things apart.
