rebuild parts/brands

I'm planning an sohc rebuild.
Looking at sealed power timing chain set( guides and tensioner) and moly rings, ( if not boring , i will drill the pistons for oil drain back.)
I will have the machine shop do the heads seals and all.
Thinking federal mongul main and rod bearings.
What brands do you guys use for rebuilds?
I'm afraid of the cheep dnj parts and so forth.

For those that have done their engines, did you rebuild the oil pump or just run it?

I'll assume the rebuild is for the 01 w 165K. For the amount of money it sounds like you are willing to spend on superior grade internals, have you considered doing a swap to a DOHC and picking up the extra 24 HP?

Obviously wiring harnesses,PCMs and the tranny would need to be swapped see sticky "S-series swap guide" in tech section.

If your ultimate plans are to turbo, supercharge, NOS, start w DOHC as the support for SOHC under the hood is -4 on average.

Plus the DOHCs are much more fun to drive (I have 2)

no , no upgrades. NIce rebuild to stop oil burning. And a new clutch. Getting it ready for him before he goes to undergrad school. That way i don't have to worry about it if he is some distance away. The 43 MPG it gets hwy is great for him, and he loves a manual trans.

Going to look today at a 98 sl2 auto for his g/f ,price is right if the car is what they say it is.
I've had a Dohc before and they are fun. Had one in a 93.

It's been years since I've done a rebuild, but all of the brands you mention are quality brands. I've used them all at one time or another. Let us know how it turns out.
