Help! A/c compressor issues
 

I have a 1999 Saturn SL1 with 241,000 miles on the engine. The A/C compressor bearing is making a lot of noise. I had decided to install a bypass pulley, since I don't see the point in installing a newer compressor in a car so used up. I found out that the bypass for 1999 models doesn't exist. I am seriously considering "retiring" the car. Should I insist in keeping it? I think miles and age may already be an issue.

I would buy a used compressor... I have picked up two for around $30 and have had no problems with them.

A bit confused. If the compressor bearing is making noise, don't turn on the A/C. A/C pulley then spins freely w serp belt.
Is it the pulley bearing that is making the noise?

If you are not having serious oil burning issues, frame rust, or other under the hood issues (cooling system OK, PS OK, tranny OK, etc., I don't see any reason to retire a good piece of transportation.
Don't know where you live nor when the AC stopped cooling so I don't know how critical the AC is.

the SOHC SL1's and SC1's, usually with manual trannys, have been known to last to 300K+ with proper maintenances (oil change 3000 mi ) Use 10W30 if you are not already. and 5W30 in the winter if you have to.

If you have 241K on the original engine, no codes of consequence and no tranny issues, I say drive it till it quits. You're out in front of most of the pack.
There are some cheap compressors out there whose cost would be justifiable for the length of time the car will be in service.

The S cars were never meant to last this long. The cars are usually dependable as long as you keep up with the maintenance. If it's at 241K, it's not from neglect. Oh, the auto trans was the weakest spot

Everyone is different w r t finances, but $30 would not stand between me and a functional air conditioned ride unless there are other serious issues.

Indeed there are no AC bypass pulleys to be had. Dorman has 94-98 covered but that's where it ends.
